Term 2 is Here — And the Clock is Ticking
For Year 12 students in NSW, Term 2 is not just another school term.
It is the start of the sprint towards the HSC Trial Examinations, the very last opportunity to change subjects, and the beginning of the UAC university application journey.
Having a clear roadmap of every key date and deadline is essential for managing stress and maximising results.
At Olympus Learning, our relatable tutors have recently navigated this exact journey. They know firsthand that missing a deadline or starting exam prep too late can significantly impact final results.
Here is everything your Year 12 student needs to know for 2026.
Can Your Child Still Change Subjects?
Yes, but only until 30 June 2026. Here is what is and is not possible:
- Dropping from Advanced to Standard (Maths or English): Allowed with principal approval before 30 June.
- Moving from Standard to Advanced: Not permitted. Students cannot move up a level in Year 12.
- Dropping a subject entirely: Possible with approval, but students must maintain the minimum units required for the HSC.
If your child is struggling in Advanced Mathematics or Advanced English, a conversation with their school and with an Olympus Learning mentor should happen this week, not next month.
Preparing for HSC Trials: What to Do Now
Most schools hold their HSC Trial Examinations in Weeks 3 to 5 of Term 3 (late July to mid-August). That gives Year 12 students approximately 10 to 12 weeks from today to prepare.
The students who perform best in Trials are those who begin structured revision now, not in the holidays.
An Olympus Learning tutor can help your child build a personalised study schedule, work through past papers, and identify the specific topics where they need the most improvement.
Our tutors are recent HSC graduates who have sat the same exams and know exactly what markers are looking for.
UAC Applications: Do Not Leave It Too Late
The Universities Admissions Centre (UAC) is the gateway to university for most NSW students.
Early Bird applications are already open (end April), and applying early is crucial for accessing the Schools Recommendation Scheme (SRS) and other early offer programs that do not rely solely on the final ATAR.
Olympus Learning has partnered with a Tertiary Pathways Advisor to offer one-on-one UAC and careers support sessions. The can help you and your child with early entry, Educational Access Schemes (EAS), degree guidance, scholarships, personal statements, and resume preparation.
