Choosing the right English course is one of the more important decisions students make going into Year 11.

The real difference between English Standard and English Advanced
English Advanced moves faster, expects more independent reading and requires more refined writing. Teachers look for insight, sophistication and purposeful analysis. Essays in Advanced usually need a strong central thesis, nuanced arguments and well chosen textual evidence.
English Standard focuses more on clarity, structure and interpretation. Students still analyse techniques and themes, but the level of abstraction and the complexity of arguments are not as demanding as in Advanced. The course is structured to support students who benefit from more concrete and accessible tasks.
How will your ATAR be affected?
English has a special place in the HSC because it is the only compulsory subject. This means your choice between English Standard and English Advanced can influence your ATAR quite significantly.
In general, English Advanced scales more favourably than English Standard. This means that a strong mark in Advanced can lift a student’s ATAR more than the same raw mark in Standard. This is because scaling takes into account the overall strength of the cohort and the level of the course.
However, this does not mean that every student should automatically choose English Advanced. A weak mark in Advanced can drag down a student’s ATAR more than a strong mark in Standard would. It is not the course label that matters most, but the level at which a student can realistically perform.
A student who consistently achieves very low results in Advanced may be better off moving into Standard and aiming for stronger marks there. Writing ability is one of the main factors. Students who can already structure paragraphs, form an argument and express ideas clearly are often well placed for English Advanced. Students who struggle with the basics of writing may find Standard more manageable, unless they are prepared to work with a tutor to improve quickly.
Confidence with textual analysis also matters. Students who like exploring how and why a text works, and who enjoy unpacking techniques, symbolism and context, usually enjoy Advanced. Students who find this type of analysis confusing may feel more secure in Standard.
Academic and career goals should also guide the decision. If a student is aiming for pathways that rely heavily on analytical writing, English Advanced is often recommended. If they are aiming for courses where English is important but not central, English Standard may be perfectly appropriate.
Workload is another consideration. English Advanced requires more independent reading, planning and drafting. Students who already have a heavy load, for example multiple extension subjects or time consuming extracurricular commitments, need to be honest about how much time they can give to English.
